Volunteer legal advisors

Our volunteer legal advisers are vital to the delivery of our telephone advice lines.

To volunteer with us you must be a woman*, and a qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive with a current practising certificate and experience in either family, employment or immigration and asylum law.

You must be willing to commit to deliver one advice session each month. Advice sessions on the Family and Sexual Harassment advice lines are 2 hours and 3 hours for the Immigration and Asylum advice lines.

All of our staff and volunteers are currently working remotely and we will consider applications from women across England and Wales.

Volunteer legal advisers receive training and expenses and we arrange regular events such as CPD accredited training and social events.

*Occupational Requirement (Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9 Part I) applies.

I have been a volunteer with Rights of Women since September 2003, which possibly makes me one of the longest-serving telephone advisers on the evening helpline; in a way this speaks for itself! The helpline is an indispensable service and many women have told me that they consider it a lifeline.

I feel as a professional woman that we all have a duty to lend a helping hand to those who need it when they are feeling frightened, vulnerable or just completely overwhelmed with the appalling feeling that the weight of the legal system.

Office volunteers

Office volunteers support the administration and delivery of our vital legal advice and information services. This is an opportunity to gain experience working within a leading women’s legal organisation, learn more about the work we do, as well as attend our training and other events.

The volunteer will be a well-motivated, organised and reliable woman* with an understanding of and commitment to the work of Rights of Women. Computer literacy and good interpersonal skills are essential for this role, as is an ability to work as part of a small team, and a commitment to our aims and objectives. We are looking for a minimum commitment of 1 day per week, ideally on a Monday, for a period of at least 3 months. This role is based at our London office.

Dealing with the legal system is often a source of great anxiety, uncertainty and confusion. I have spoken with many women in very difficult situations. It is important that they know that we are here for them and it is rewarding to help

There is a shared commitment at Rights of Women to assisting women who need help with legal problems. There remains a significant need for the service provided by the advice line and I would encourage women lawyers to join the team of evening advisers.
