Training Series: Immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse: 11th, 24th Oct & 8th Nov, 2024
A series of three training courses about immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse.
All courses are now full.
We are offering a series of three training courses about immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse.
Courses are free and will be delivered online via Zoom by one of our immigration lawyers.
Attending all three courses is not necessary; however, we encourage participation in all sessions for maximum benefit.
The courses will be repeated throughout 2024 to ensure as many people can attend as possible.
If you have already attended, there is no need to attend again.
Eligibility criteria
We can offer places to professionals in England and Wales who work on violence against women and girls (VAWG) issues from the community, voluntary, and statutory sectors. This includes refuge workers, IDVAs, ISVAs, social workers, housing officers and outreach workers.
Priority will be given to professionals from voluntary and community organisations whose primary role is to provide direct support to victims of domestic abuse.

Migrant Victims of Domestic Abuse Concession (MVDAC)
This the first course in our Immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse series.

The Government made changes to the Destitute Domestic Violence Concession (DDVC), by creating the Migrant Victims of Domestic Abuse Concession (MVDAC) on 16 February 2024. This course addresses what the changes have been.
It will include:
- the expansion of the Concession to include migrant victim / survivors with other types of immigration status and the different considerations that apply to them;
- the risks for children of being included in applications and best practice in relation to them.

Indefinite leave for Victims of Domestic Abuse
This the second course in our Immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse series.

For more than two decades, migrant victim / survivors with certain types of partner visa have been able to secure their immigration status on relationship breakdown by applying for settlement as a victim of domestic abuse. This course addresses who can qualify under this route and explores the impact of changes introduced by government since 31 January 2024.
It will include:
- the expansion of the settlement route to include migrant victims / survivors who have been abandoned overseas and the different considerations that apply to them;
- the extra requirements on children who face additional barriers under this route.

Victims of domestic abuse with pre-settled status as family members under the EUSS
This is the third course in our Immigration law for migrant victims of domestic abuse series.

Migrant victim / survivors who have pre-settled status based on their relationship with an EU citizen under the EU Settlement Scheme do not need to change their immigration status on relationship breakdown. They benefit from legal protections under the EU Settlement Scheme and many qualify for welfare benefits and social housing. Government changes on 4 April 2024 offer this group access to the MVDAC and the route for settlement as a victim of domestic abuse. This course explores the unique considerations that apply to people with pre-settled status and why the MVDAC / settlement route option has hidden risks for them. It will include:
- applying for settlement as a victim of domestic abuse under the EU Settlement Scheme
- the risks and benefits of switching into the MVDAC / settlement as a victim of domestic abuse route
